Description:
An introductory course meant for the first time or novice paddler interested in building a foundation of skills and knowledge about sea kayaking or kayak touring. The lesson takes place on the Hudson River and is ideally suited for the person looking to safely paddle on larger bodies of water like the Hudson River or Long Island Sound. Participants will have the opportunity to work with instructors to practice and refine their skills. Our Guides will talk about on the water safety, decision-making, essential safety gear, basic touring kayak safety, rules of the road, crossings, basic equipment, kayak parts and terminology. The skills covered during this lesson will include, lifting a boat, launching and landing, fitting a boat to you, decking a boat, forward strokes, stopping, reverse strokes, turning with forward stroke, and turning with the reverse stroke, the low brace and the high brace. Under the close supervision of instructors, participants will have the optional opportunity to confront a new paddlers worst fear, tipping over. There will also be opportunities to participant in and observe some basic self-rescue and assisted rescue techniques like the TX rescue and paddle float rescue.
